Usually a day does not go by without a student or fellow designer asking us at The Bold Edge | Jewish Design Central, if I know if a website with free images. These free images websites are great for students that use the images within their homework projects or by designers in the field that need to produce low budget designs for low budget clients.

As time goes on, I kept adding to my list of websites, until one day (that is today) I decided that is it! I am creating a post with all the websites I know of or have been told about on Jewish Women Creatives Worldwide (the LinkedIn group I created). I will be adding to the list as time goes on so make sure to bookmark the site.

Please make sure to check out if the image you are interested in using from any one of these sites is permitted for commercial usage or if there are limitations for usage. The Bold Edge is not responsible for any legalities.

Please comment below if you have others to add to the list!

Just wanted to add..I have found though that when working on a paid project you will generally be purchasing images for the design since the free image websites do not have the really amazing images. However, with some creativity you can use Photoshop to combine 2 free images into 1 great image. You have to weigh between the cost of buying an image and the cost of the time you spent to create the custom image.

Use this combo Free Pesach bookmark and Pesach place card for your Seder table!

Today is a very special day! We wish to give thanks to all our loyal readers by giving you a little present.

I got the inspiration for this Pesach bookmarket/placecard idea from Martha Stewart magazine and created one with the food of this holiday: drumroll…Matzah.

Start your Seder table off with these beautiful Pesach placecards/bookmarks by each of your guest’s chairs. But wait, you can also customize it with your guest’s names, so everyone knows where to sit. During the Seder, you and your guest’s can use this as a convenient book mark too.

A good idea would be to print on heavy card stock and laminate it to prevent the famous drenching by wine spills. Also, if you laminate them, you can use a dry erase marker to write the names on it and wipe and reuse for the next year too.

This is beautiful, multipurpose and super convenient.

DAY FIFTEEN: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2013

Purim is coming. My 3 year old daughter brought home her little Purim characters on sticks. She then proceeded to start cutting (I do not know why these little kids are sooo fixated with cutting). She started with Haman. I told her that she is cutting off hi feet, she told me, “Haman is bad, so it is OK”. Kids are so not predictable, they keep you on your intellectual toes.

Now, here is your personal Purim message from our team here at The Bold Edge | Jewish Design Central. Also skip down below for a link to The Container store for a free label printable download to label your Mishloach Manos. Today I really got into the Purim spirit.

DAY FOURTEEN: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2013

Today I really got into the Purim spirit. I really enjoy working on Mishloach Manos. For some odd reason this year, we were working on several different color schemes: Think gold and silver (with mattes thrown in to tone it down), Then on to the lilac and brown, finally light blue and brown. Such a relief to have it done early this year. Purim is one of my favorite days of the year. It reeks of creativity and fun, with a meaningful side to the day as well. Balanced day (like a balanced design) Wait, there are definitely enough people on the street that are unbalanced.

I have a great website to share with you today. All designers use at at least 1 point Lorem Ipsum gobbly gook text. I stumbled upon an amazing resource that I plan to share with the students of our Web Design Comprehensive course. But, I will share this secret with you too…Drum roll!

Introducing..Lorem Pixel. Create dummy images in exactly the size you need, with images in many different categories. All the web design placeholder images you need. Simply amazing.

Now, as always. Make it a designer day! See you again on Thursday!

DAY FOURTEEN: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2013

Tuesday was an interesting day, I attended a performance given by special adults in HASC. It was amazing seeing their creativity and drive to do well. Even though they have many either physical and /or emotional obstacles in their way, they smile (big) and persevere. Case in point, the main soloist was in a wheelchair. She was put into her standing wheelchair for her solo dance, the directors attached a rope to both sides of her wheelchair and pulled it to simulate dancing. After the performance, she said, “I danced, I danced” It was such an awesome moment. Another of the cast members forgot how to say some of his lines and was really upset until the director said that he would go over the lines with him again. Such emotional inspiration. We can all learn from these special adults the art of perseverance, happiness with one’s lot and feel fortunate for the bounty Hashem has given us!

Now, as always. Make it a designer day! See you again on Wednesday!

DAY FOURTEEN: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2013

Mondays are always busy days, but today I cam armed with a to do list and b’h even with all the usual unexpected things that come up I was able to accomplish. Isn’t that such a fabulous feeling?

Today’s gem is a tip on increasing production. I was reading such an interesting article from Inc.com…In order to really work without distractions, it is worthwhile sometimes to work on a place that is not your office or home. A place like a coffee shop is great for this, or even your local library works too. Aha! that is why I feel so motivated whenever I go to Barnes and Noble, I am focused without distractions etc. Try it I am sure it will work for you too!

Now, as always. Make it a designer day! See you again on Tuesday!

DAY THIRTEEN: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2013

Today was a great day spent outdoors. I decided to go explore a neighborhood I visit maybe once in 7 years. It felt a little touristy and exciting. It is nice to see how different neighborhoods have different designs according to their clientele. Today I have a truckload of resources to share with you and tide you over the weekend (note to self: important to air out, to refresh the creative juice!) Here goes.

1. Place it. I am sure you are wondering, what is this about exactly. Well here is a visual.

Basically, you can specify a web address, or upload your own photo to be pocked up on the spot on a large variety of smart phones, computer screens, iPad like devices. I think this is super cool, instead of having to create a mockup in Photoshop, it is done for me, and then I just have to right click on image to save it and show a client.

2. HTML 5 cheat sheet. A great reference I saw pinned in Pinterest. Check out this comprehensive, beautifully designed informative sheet.

3. The Making of a Book. This video is simply amazing. See what goes into making a book by hand. How was it done years ago. The amount of processes (actually leading with lead, inserting gutters. Simply astounding how far we have come.

4. Get started with vintage type design. I saw this awesome tutorial when researching something unrelated and liked how the process was explained. You would be using Illustrator to create this current vintage look that I am sure you have seen used in designs.

5. Using GREP styled in Indesign. InDesign Secrets in a great secret that needs to be used by all users of InDesign. They write up all these little tips and tricks that will make your InDesign workflow much smoother. In this tip, they go through how to use GREP. Do not know what that is? In simple terms in is sorta a scripting way to really automate InDesign. Check out the tip to learn more!

Now, get down to it and enjoy the goodness and as always, Make it a designer day! See you again on Monday!

DAY THIRTEEN: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2013

Today was another beautiful day with lots of interesting ideas percolating. it is great to be involved with education becase our students teach me so much and make me strive to be on top of the design fields. Their questions are challenging and keep us on our toes. It is like those mind games that you feel your brain hurting sometimes. Have you ever experienced that yet? It reminds me of a specific job I had for a year just designing packaging every single day (in the evening I was doing web design, that was a very busy period). I remember my brain actually hurting becase I had to come up with original designs. The best thing was when the items were sold in stores nationwide, even better was the feeling that the Mishloach Manos packaging my friend’s sister was giving out was designed by me. The rewards of a designer…what we kvell over sorta like they are our brain children.

I also started looking into something interesting called rich snippets thanks to a student who took our WordPress course (I guess we train them too well in our motto to always be in line with the ever changing web design field) It seems very interesting and I am looking into the implementation and ramifications for client’s on search engines. Have you used rich snippets? Let me know how and what benefits your site got. Tomorrow promises to be an exciting day and I cannot wait for it to start. Until then, make it a designer day!

DAY TWELVE: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2013

Today was a busy busy day! I was happy that it was sunny because I work very well on solar power (hmm may need to take in some vitamin D for some artificial sun) Anyways, I was at the Parnassah Expo today which was interesting. First, I met some members of my family who were exhibiting there so that was cool. It was interesting meeting people who I was in touch with by phone or email. Is it not interesting putting a face to the name? I gained alot of food for thought Were you at the Expo? Let me know what you thought. I will save some resource links for tomorrow so keep your eyes peeled!

OK that’s all folks for today. Until Wednesday!
